The city of Baghdad is currently the capital of Iraq and the largest city in the country. It's current population is estimated to be between five and seven million people. Today, Baghdad is considered an unsanitary and unsafe place to live by most people, but, believe it or not, this war-torn city was actually once the epicenter of culture and education in the Middle East.
Baghdad was founded on July 30, 722 by caliph Abu Ja'far Al-Mansur. The city was meant to be the new seat of the government of the Islamic Empire.
