The Unsinkable "Molly" Brown


Molly Brown: Unraveling the MythThe woman who would become known to history as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," was born Margaret Tobin. She was born in Hannibal, Missouri on July 18, 1867. In life her friends called her Maggie or Mrs. J.J. Brown. After her death popular culture dubbed her "Molly." She is most famous for her brave deeds during the sinking of the Titanic, but she was also an enthusiastic activist and volunteer.

Margaret left her hometown at age 18. She moved with her sister to Leadville, Colorado, where she worked in a department store. This is where she met her future husband James Joseph Brown or J.J. The couple married on September 1, 1886. Maggie moved into her husband's cabin in the mining camp where he worked as an engineer. Shortly thereafter Maggie began organizing soup kitchens in the mining community. She went on to mother two children, a son and a daughter.  Read more of this article.  Image Source
