Captain Jack's Stronghold

USGS Topographic Quadrangle Map - Captain Jacks Stronghold, California (Folded/Waterproof)Captain Jack's stronghold is a rocky, natural fortification located in Lava Beds National Monument in Tulelake, California. This site was used by the Modoc Indian tribe for hunting and gathering. In 1873, two bloody battles occurred here between the men of the Modoc tribe and the United States Army.

The late 1800's were a difficult time for the Native American people. The United States government was demanding that many Native Americans be forced off of their ancestral lands and placed on Indian reservations. Any tribes that opposed their relocation would be forced to leave, oftentimes violently.  Read more of this article.  Image Source
